Clynelish 1996 Prima & Ultima Fourth Release is a rare and highly distinctive Single Malt Scotch Whisky, drawn from two experimental European oak butts seasoned with Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry.

Described as both the first and last of its kind, this exceptional release brings a new dimension of richness, sweetness, and dark fruit character to Clynelish’s famously crisp, coastal style. Filled in 1996, the extended maturation has amplified the whisky’s depth and power while preserving the elegant waxy character for which Clynelish is renowned.

This one-of-a-kind Clynelish whisky pays tribute to the pioneering spirit of those willing to explore new approaches to whisky maturation. A compelling addition to any serious Scotch whisky collection, it combines rarity, experimentation, and mature Highland character in a beautifully complex expression.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Mellow, restrained, and gently drying, with a delicate prickle of spice. Initial aromas of medicinal herbs, damp moss, and subtle grapefruit gradually develop into light oiliness, soft toffee, and a faint trace of fragrant smoke.

The aromas remain elegant and comparatively closed at first. A few drops of water reveal greater toffee sweetness alongside a delicate note of balsa wood.

Body

Medium-bodied, with a smooth, oily, and lightly waxy texture.

Palate

The palate opens with surprising sweetness and fresh apple fruit, supported by Clynelish’s signature waxy, tooth-coating mouthfeel. The sweetness quickly becomes drier, followed by an energetic wave of chilli-pepper spice.

Flavours of caramelised apple and slightly burnt toffee emerge, creating an impression reminiscent of a toffee apple with charred edges. Adding a little water increases the sweetness and softens the sharper spice.

Finish

Long and lively, with a pronounced spicy kick and a cooling aftertaste balanced by the warming sensation of Szechuan pepper.

With a few drops of water, the finish becomes sweeter and slightly salty, while the spice grows softer and more integrated.

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy neat to experience its full intensity, or add a few drops of water to reveal additional sweetness, fruit, and complexity.
